APMA Teaches Parents about Foot Care for Kids

children's foot health‘First Step: Keeping Children’s Feet Healthy and Happy’ is a new online resource from the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) that’s designed to promote good foot health in young children.

The APMA’s goal is for parents to use it and recognize the importance of podiatric attention in their kids’ early development stages. "It's important that parents pay close attention to children's feet even before they start to walk, beginning at birth and continuing as they take their first steps, go to school, and participate in sports," stated APMA President Frank Spinosa.

Children’s feet are still developing and are therefore very susceptible to diseases and injuries. For help avoiding these conditions, think about calling podiatrist Dr. Charles Chapel of Chapel Podiatry. Dr. Chapel can offer professional advice about how to keep your kids’ feet safe and clean.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet in childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care from birth to school-age.

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

· Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet

· Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.  Be sure the child wears comfortable and protective shoes so that they can grow into their feet properly.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet

  • Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus
  • Be watchful of any pain or injury
  • Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible
  • Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play

Children of all ages are constantly developing and growing, and as a parent you want to make sure that nothing is hindering their maturation.
