What to do in case of an ankle sprain?

Ankle sprains are common injuries that can affect anyone. Whether you’ve injured your ankle while exercising or simply going about your day, it’s important to take immediate action to prevent worsening your injury.

The gold standard for healing any injured body part is the RICE protocol: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.

Rest: Stay off your injured ankle as much as possible--at least for several days. Depending on the extent of the injury, you may need to take it easy for several weeks to avoid causing additional strain as your ankle heals.

Ice: Cold packs help ease your pain by reducing swelling and inflammation. Apply for 20 minutes at a time up to 3 times a day, and be sure to use a barrier such as a cloth or paper towel over your skin.

Compression: Wrap an elastic bandage around the ankle to help decrease swelling and provide support. You can buy a bandage like this in any drug store.

Elevation: Whenever you sit or lie down, rest your foot on a stool or stack of pillows to lift it above the level of the heart. This helps fluids drain from the injured tissues more easily.

Medications for Pain Relief

Over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, can help you through the worst of the pain. As always, be sure to follow the precautions on the bottle or use as prescribed by your physician.
