Suffering From an Ingrown Toenail?

Our feet spend most of their days carrying the weight of everything we do while being stuffed into shoes. This can cause our feet to develop issues such as ingrown toenails. Dr. Charles Chapel, with Chapel Podiatry in Brooksville, FL, can help patients with issues resulting from an ingrown toenail.

What is an Ingrown Toenail?

Ingrown toenails occur when the side of the toenail grows into the actual skin of the toe, usually the big toe.

This usually happens when the toenail is cut too short and its natural regrowth causes it to dig into the sides. Improper trimming of the corners can also lead to this. Shoes that are tight at the toes have also been a problem. Frequent stubbing of toes into walls or furniture can also be a problem.

Though ingrown toenails are not inherently genetic, their physical conditions of the foot which can be passed down that increase the likelihood of ingrown toenails, such as high arches or other bone-related issues.

How Do You Prevent Ingrown Toenails?

The best way to prevent ingrown toenails is to be very mindful while trimming the nail. Take great care to not cut too short, ensuring the edges are even.

Keep the toes protected with properly-fitting footwear - don’t even wear socks that are too snug on the toes.

How Do You Treat Ingrown Toenails?

This greatly depends on the severity and frequency of ingrown toenails.

In mild cases, just tending to the toe and keeping it clean will allow for it to grow back properly. In cases where the ingrowth is more severe, it may be time to see a podiatrist to be removed. Left untreated, it can lead to inflammation and infection. For chronic, recurring cases, there are also methods of laser surgery that can help prevent future instances of ingrown toenails.
